Question 5

How would these two groups (students and teachers) rank order the strategies in terms of usefulness?

  1. I don't know if the students would rank them at all. Call me pessimistic, but I don't think a student looks at an activity or assignment and thinks that it helped them learn better or worse. Instead they think of it being fun or miserable. Is it something they "have" to do or something they "get" to do. In terms of usefulness for a teacher, I would rank them as follows:
    1. Verbal Visual
    2. Graphic Organizers
    3. Retell
These are the 3 I use most regularly. They not only give different learning styles a chance in their comfort zone, but also give me feedback immediately about what they grasp and do not grasp.

  2. My ranking is similar, possibly because of the frequency of use:
    1 - Graphic organizers
    2 - Verbal visual
    3 - Retell
What is funny is that retell is probably used the most of the three but isn't as developmentally useful. The creation and connection phases of graphic organizers and verbal visuals would be more important but are used once a week, in my class anyway. Retelling on the other hand is used on a daily basis.

  3. I would rank
    1. graphic organizers
    2. Verbal visual
    3. Jigsaw readings
I think each strategy is effective as long as it blends well with the texts being used. For example: the graphic organizer needs to fit the genre of the texts being taught and ask appropriate questions.
